Pig Out

Hi Everyone,

As you can tell by lateness with this week’s comic, it’s been a busy work week! Thank you for your patience and continuing to come back and see Jim Corn!

I don’t know about you (or “y’all” if you’re from Texas), but after a busy week, I look forward to some weekend R&R. In addition to drawing next week’s comic, I get to help build rockets with my youngest boys for a big Cub Scout rocket launch on Saturday. Last year the rockets ended up in a  kite and rocket-eating tree and on the roof of the bank. Here’s hoping we’ll have happier landings and get to take the rockets home this year!

Hope you’ve got something fun planned for the weekend. If not, I recommend taking in the Captain America movie. I’ve read a lot of Cap comics over the years and they really did a great job working in so many details of his history into the movie. I can’t wait to see the next Cap movie where they explore how a man from the 1940s would adjust to the world of 2011. Also, don’t forget to stay until the end of the credits for the bonus scene. Looking forward to seeing Cap along with Iron Man, the Hulk and Thor in next summer’s Avengers movie!

You’re back! That’s fantastic!!

This strip needed the extra space, so I went ahead and made it a “Sunday” comic. Would it have been too much if I had made the bag a Piggly Wiggly bag?

Hi Corn Fritters! Welcome back!

Summer in Texas is just too durn hot, so I stay indoors and do a lot of reading. What does a cartoonist read? Well, currently, my list includes:

The Adventures of Tintin – Never read any of these books before. Tintin was the intrepid young reporter created by french cartoonist Hergé. Since he’s got a series of movies coming up, I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about. Fun, quick adventures (but I still prefer Uncle Scrooge).

Paul Klee – Read a biography about this German/Swiss artist from early last century. As a painter, he experimented with many styles, producing some interesting design work and some amusing images, but his theories were a little out there, for me. If you’d like to get more info on Paul Klee or see more of his works, here’s a good site to start at: https://www.artsy.net/artist/paul-klee

The Wall Street Journal – A great source of world and business news, but I enjoy their features even more. Yesterday I learned about Turkish olive oil wrestling in leather pants (don’t ask) and today about Dublin Dr. Pepper.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe – My Dad, Civil War history buff that he is, read this recently, and after I read an article about the effects of the book over the years (both positive and negative) I thought I should read it, too. It is said that President Lincoln once met with Stowe, saying “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.”

Fablehaven (book series) by Brandon Mull – My oldest boys had me read Brandon Mull’s 5-volume fantasy series to them a number of years ago and now I’m reading it to my younger sons. A great series to read out loud and I’d love to see a movie made. I’m on book 2 again. Also noticed that Brandon Mull has a new series (Beyonders, A World Without Heroes) that has just been released. We met him a number of years back during one of his book tours. A nice guy and a fun writer. His Fablehaven books are targeted to ages 9-12, but can be enjoyed by all ages.

Wherever you are, I hope you’re enjoying some down-time reading, as well!

Speaking of Sweet Tomatoes (No, I’m not talking about my Wife.), I don’t know if you have one in your area, but it is a favorite soup and salad restaurant of mine. A while back they had a contest where you were to make a salad face to post on their website. Unfortunately, I was a day late in entering. Still, I thought I’d share the pirate salad face I created and maybe one of these days I’ll have to try making a Jim Corn comic using vegetables. Or perhaps a Jim Corn veggie action figure starting with a real ear of corn. I LOVE playing with my food! (Don’t tell my Mom.)

Thanks again for stopping by The Amaizing Jim Corn! See you next Tuesday.

Also, if you are in the Dallas area, don’t forget to mark August 6th on your calendar for the Dallas Webcomics Expo! Hope to see you there!
